condition at local hospitals. the alleged gunman, 24-year-old james eagan holmes, is in the county jail, reportedly in solitary confinement for his own safety. his first court appearance is scheduled for monday morning. today, police began their search of his apartment after detonating an explosive device holmes had left inside, and authorities say that video shows him picking up a shipment of 150 pounds of ammunition. and new pictures of holmes have also emerged. in a summer lab program for premed college students in san diego where he grew up. that was six years ago. we have a team of correspondents working this story tonight, looking at those lives cut short, those who survived, and the investigation. joining me first is barry petersen with what we're learning about some of those who died. barry. >> reporter: the effort today has been to identify the dead. so far names of 11 of the 12 victims, and the release of every name is news that is devastating to family and friends. on his '27th birthday, alex sullivan had much to celebrate-- his coming one-year wedding anniversary, and from t

of colorado, said to be a san diego native to start off with. james eagan holmes. he arrived apparently according to police after much planning. he was suited out from head to toe in tactical gear, carrying multiple weapons. imagine this. inside this state-of-the-art theater, this premiere movie, so many of the people in that theater had no other way of knowing that this wasn't somehow part of the presentation until it was clear the gas canister he fired off was real to suppress the crowd and the rounds coming from his weapons were real. our team is here assembled to cover this story. let's begin with what happened with nbc's miguel almaguer. >> 315 and 314 for a shooting at century theaters. >> reporter: the emergency calls flooded in as hundreds rushed out. >> i have people running out of the theater that have been shot. >> reporter: the victims soaked in blood, some carried out by family and friends. police say the gunman, 24-year-old neuro science graduate student james holmes wore body armor and was armed with an assault rifle, a 12 gauge shotgun and two glock hand guns. minutes in

the mechanisms that he had put together, james holmes had put together to set off the stuff inside the apartment. once they did that, now they go in to each device that's individually there. what they're going to do is bring in a dump truck eventually and take out all those devices and put them in this dump truck can take them out to the east part of town and destroy them out there. then they'll go through a lot more investigative work inside his apartment, specifically. we know there was at least 30 home made grenades, but more than 30 bombs inside becauses there were a number of bottles of liquid and he had a bunch of different powders and things that if mixed together would cause a fire, basically. he was going to try to burn this place down, try to kill the person who opened the front door and that would set off a fire storm. that's with they believe he had tried to put in place and thankfully that did not happen. i want to show you other video we shot earlier today about the investigative work that's being donely. the atf, f.b.i. are both here, as well as local authorities. atf and f.b.i.

they definitely feel like the most troubling aspects and the most troubling devices they found in james holmes' apartment have been diffused and they want to remove those devices and take them to secure locations so if there need to be other det nations and taken apart and dismantled they can do that in more secure environments instead of this apartment. now what happens is the collection of evidence. authorities here want to go through his belongings and his computers and that sort of thing trying to find any kind of evidence that would help him explain how he prepared and what led to this massacre in aurora, colorado, so all of that work continues. we're seeing the local firefighters that were here starting to clean up the hoses that were brought in as a precaution, but all of the investigators and bomb technicians are still here. they say there still is several more hours of work to do inside that apartment and the material that they want to get out. they also want to begin assessing just exactly what james holmes put in there. they weren't exactly sure what kind of materials he had been us

colleagues have spoken to the woman that lives just below james holmes and is obviously one of the people that had been evacuated. she explained to us the night of the shooting that there was loud music emerging from james holmes apartment and that she had gone up there to knock on the door and at one point had called authorities to let them know about that, but they said they were too busy with the shooting and they couldn't spare someone to come over here and do that, but she said the door was unlocked and told us the door was unlocked. obviously, she's very emotional about the fact she easily could have opened up that door and who knows what would have happened if she had done that. so luckily, for her, she decided not to do that and went back downstairs, but a lot of this area remains cordoned off and remains shut down. at one point, it would allow authorities to come back and james holmes' apartment, that will be shut down for quite some time and i'm not sure whether the surrounding areas will be opened up here in the coming days. obviously, the people whoive around this area are pro
